SEVEN TO TEN DAYS
Coral Bay and Exmouth
(1250km from Perth)
Travellers with a week or more can
discover the majesty of the Coral
Bay region and its famed Ningaloo
Marine Park. This is WA’s world-
renowned snorkelling and diving
hotspot and is home to Australia’s
largest fringing reef (270km). In
Coral Bay, you can snorkel straight
off the beach into amazing coral
gardens. If you’re keen to swim with
whale sharks, Exmouth, which is
152km north of Coral Bay, is the place
to go, with most tour companies
departing from there.
You can also swim with manta rays
and spot dugongs and sea turtles all
year round. Not surprisingly, this
remarkable region has been awarded
a World Heritage listing.
In addition, the area offers safe
swimming beaches, surfing, glass-
bottomed boat trips and some of
the country’s best game fishing.
Combined with Cape Range National
Park, which has breathtaking gorges
and canyons explored on foot or in a
cruise boat, there’s no shortage of
spectacular experiences in both
Coral Bay and Exmouth.
HOW TO GET THERE: It’s possible to
do the 13-hour drive via the North
West Coastal Highway to Coral Bay in
a day but a stop is recommended.
Ideally, take two days and stop
overnight in Kalbarri. Alternatively,
fly from Perth with Qantas to
Learmonth Airport. An airport
transfer bus operates from Coral Bay.
STAY AT: Ningaloo Reef Resort is in
Coral Bay within the Ningaloo Coast
World Heritage Area. Its 34 rooms are
on the north-facing beach on Ningaloo
Reef, with the majority being studios
or apartments ($219–$299 per night).
There’s also a penthouse ($399 per
night) and a family-style room ($385
per night). Facilities include a pool,
café, barbecues, Wi-Fi and laundry.
RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park is
in the northwest coastal town of
Exmouth. The park is mostly a caravan
park with a mix of modern one- and
two-bedroom cabins, along with
backpacker accommodation. Prices
start from $49 per night for a powered
site to $236 for family cabins.
