It’s something you hope you never have to use, but travel
insurance is one of the most important things you can take
on your holiday.
If things go wrong and you neglected to take out travel
insurance before you left, the costs can be very high. On the
low end, a lost suitcase can cost you $200. At the high end,

says medical bills from some countries can be a shock to
families. “ We have the comfort of Medicare to look after us,
but should something happen when you’re overseas, you’re
reliant on that country’s own medical system,” he says.
“ This is why it’s so important that travellers take out
travel insurance. The costs of overseas care can bankrupt
people. It’s simply not worth the risk.”
Things can go wrong, too, when travelling domestically,
so Michael also advises taking out cover before you set off
on your Australian holiday.
“ People sometimes forget about insurance because it’s
local but it’s a smart thing to do. You don’t want to ruin your holiday.
Not only do you protect your belongings, you get peace of mind.”

EQUAL ACCESS TO MOBILITY
According to Transport for NSW, despite
Indigenous Australians making up two per cent
of the eligible driver population, only 0.5 per
cent have their driver’s licence. In NSW alone,
this means that over 12,000 Aboriginals and
Torres Strait Islanders aged 17 to 24 could have
a driver’s licence but don’t .
The NRMA’s vision is for Indigenous Australians
to have equal access to mobility and the
opportunities it brings. Back in 2014, the NRMA
used an FIA road safety grant to fund professional
lessons, safer driver courses, licence fees and
training for NRMA Members to supervise extra
logbook hours. The NRMA is now seeking to
continue this work through the Indigenous Leaner
Driver Mentor Program.
We also know that obtaining a driver’s licence is
an important step for refugees in the first stages of
settlement and the NRMA has committed to piloting
two refugee learner driver mentor programs – one
in Sydney’s west (Fairfield) and another in
Wollongong. Being able to drive can make it easier
for refugees to find employment and participate in
many other aspects of community life.
