WHILE DRIVING ON WET DAYS, have you
noticed that vision through the windscreen
isn’t as clear as it used to be? Perhaps the
windscreen is streaky and the wipers are
squeaking or skipping across the glass.
You could need new wiper blades. The part
that touches your windscreen is made from
rubber or, increasingly, silicone rubber compounds. The wipers
sit outside the car and are subject to elements such as
ultraviolet light and sea salt, which degrade the rubber.
Another factor in determining their lifespan is where you drive
and how far. On wet roads, other vehicles throw up plenty of
spray, which is full of dirt and debris that can quickly chop up
and destroy the rubber on your wiper blades.
Manufacturers don’t usually specify time intervals for blade
replacement. Most service centres will look at the condition of
the blades when your car is being serviced and may suggest
replacement. Don’t accept this recommendation blindly – you
can check the condition of the wipers yourself and, on many
vehicles, they’re not too difficult to replace. Spare parts outlets
carry a large range of replacement wiper blades.
Firstly, check your windscreen – carwash waxes, exhaust
particulates from other vehicles and tree sap can build up on
the screen, and even new blades can chatter and skip over
these substances. Clean the windscreen (including the
interior’s side) with a good domestic glass cleaner. Then, lift
the wiper arm off the windscreen and rub your finger along the
rubber section. If you feel bumps, or the rubber is hard and
chipped, it’s time to replace the blades.
Drivers of older vehicles may have to replace wiper blades
more often. Over time, windscreens in older vehicles develop
tiny grooves in the swept areas, which can quickly deteriorate
the blade surface.
To extend the life of your wiper blades, always use a good
quality additive in your washer bottle. Avoid using dish washing
liquid, as it can make the water too thick to be effective.
